updated June 19, 2025
Celebrity chef Anne Burrell, who passed away on June 17 at the age of 55, had previously expressed a desire to appear on Meghan Markle’s Netflix show. The news of her death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow chefs and friends.
Burrell spoke about her interest in Markle’s lifestyle series in an April interview with The Daily Mail. When asked if she would consider being on the show, she joked, “Sure, of course. I’d go to the opening of an envelope. Why not cook with Meghan?”
Despite her willingness to collaborate with the Duchess of Sussex, Burrell admitted she hadn’t tried Markle’s “As Ever” jam. “I’m not realy a jam girl. Occasionally, I make them for my husband,” she said. “I make scones and we have jam then. other than that, I wouldn’t say I’m super jammy.”

Earlier this month, political commentator Esther Krakue criticized Markle’s Netflix show, calling it a “business risk” for the streaming service. Krakue argued that Markle lacked the “entertainment quality” to host a accomplished show.
In contrast to Krakue’s opinion, Burrell’s interest in the show highlights the Duchess’s appeal to some within the culinary world.
Days before her death, Burrell reconnected with fellow chef Elizabeth Falkner. Falkner described their reunion as “sweet” and said they had made plans to stay in touch more often. “I’m very grateful to have had that special night. I feel like [our friendship] just got cut really short fast,” Falkner said.
Falkner honored Burrell with an Instagram tribute, sharing a photo of them together and calling her a “fierce and fun culinary competitor.”

Rachael Ray also shared a heartfelt tribute to Burrell on Instagram, posting several pictures, including one from Burrell’s wedding where Ray served as a bridesmaid. “I can’t quite believe it. Such a strong, vibrant, fearless woman,so full of life and love, could be gone so soon. anne was a rockstar!” Ray wrote.
Burrell was found unconscious in her Brooklyn home on Tuesday morning. Law enforcement sources reported responding to a call about cardiac arrest.
