Annual Air Quality Report Highlights Global Disparities in Pollution Levels

An annual report by IQAir reveals that only seven countries had good air quality throughout the year last year, while two Thai areas were among the top 10 cities with the worst air quality in Asia.

A new report from IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company, said that in 2023 it collected data from 30,000 air monitoring centers in 78,12 cities in 134 countries and territories. to measure air quality and analyze that Which country or city? It has the worst air quality in the world if you consider the whole year.

The study found that there were only 7 countries. At the air quality level throughout 2023, it does not exceed the criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO), that is, the whole year the dust value does not exceed 5 micrograms per cubic meter at all.

These 7 countries include: Australia, Estonia, Finland, Grenada, Iceland, Mauritius aNew Zealand

As for the top 5 countries with the most dust throughout the year:

  • Bangladesh The annual average dust level is 79.9 micrograms per cubic metre, which exceeds the criteria 15 times.
  • Pakistan The annual average dust level is 73.7 micrograms per cubic metre, which exceeds the criteria 14 times.
  • India The annual average dust level is 54.4 micrograms per cubic metre, which exceeds the criteria 10 times.
  • Tajikistan The annual average dust value is 49.0 micrograms per cubic metre, which exceeds the criteria 9 times.
  • Burkina Faso The annual average dust level is 46.6 micrograms per cubic metre, which exceeds the criteria 9 times.

whileThailand is ranked 36th. The average annual dust level is 23.3 micrograms per cubic metre. Exceeds the threshold by about 4 times.

But if you consider every city, it is found that among the 100 cities with the worst air pollution in the world, 99 cities are in Asia and 83 cities are in India, and all of them have dust levels that are greater than stones the World Health Organization test more than 10 times, especially the Indian city of Beguracai. The annual average dust level is as high as 118.9 micrograms per cubic metre. It is almost 24 times more than the standard.

The report says that Across India, 1.3 billion people, or 96%, live with dust levels at least seven times higher than WHO guidelines.

Shockingly, out of the 99 Asian cities with the worst air quality, 2 Thai cities are in the Top 10: Phan District, Chiang Rai Province (annual average 51.9 micrograms per cubic metre) a Muang District, Chiang Rai Province (Annual average 50.8 micrograms per cubic metre)

The cities with the best year-round air quality were Kuusamo, Utsjogi and Sodankyla in Finland, all with annual average dust levels of just 0.3 micrograms per cubic metre.

Frank Hammes, CEO of IQAir Global, said: “We’ve seen that air pollution affects every part of our lives. And usually in some of the most polluted countries It is likely to reduce people’s life expectancy by 3-6 years.”

When PM2.5 dust is inhaled, the pollution particles travel deep into the lung tissue where they can enter the bloodstream. and is linked to asthma Heart and lung disease, cancer and other respiratory diseases, as well as intellectual disability in children

Hammes said. Pollution levels in the region will not improve significantly. “Without significant changes in terms of energy infrastructure and agricultural practices.”

He added: “What is worrying in many parts of the world is that The things that pollute the air outdoors are also the things that pollute the air indoors…so cooking with dirty fuel creates a lot more dust than you see outdoors.”
