Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim attends SCO summit in China
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is representing Malaysia at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to deepening relations with China and fostering regional cooperation.The visit also serves as a gesture of solidarity with China, acknowledging the sacrifices made by the Chinese people during World War II, as stated by Wisma Putra according to The Edge Malaysia.
Zafrul Tengku abdul Aziz is also participating in the summit.
ASEAN-SCO Collaboration and Malaysia’s Role
As the 2024 Chair of ASEAN, Malaysia aims to strengthen ties between ASEAN and the SCO. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will hold a courtesy call with President Xi Jinping and a bilateral meeting with Premier Li Qiang. Premier Li Qiang will also host a dinner in honor of the Prime Minister and the Malaysian delegation.

Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) established diplomatic relations on may 31, 1974. As 2009, China has consistently been Malaysia’s largest trading partner. In 2024, total trade between the two countries reached RM484.12 billion, representing 16.8% of Malaysia’s total global trade volume of RM2.879 trillion as reported by The Edge Malaysia. This signifies the substantial economic importance of the relationship.
The Prime Minister will also engage with business communities from both China and Malaysia to further explore opportunities for economic growth and investment.
