Anwar Seeks Trump’s Backing for ASEAN-U.S. Summit
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is actively seeking President Donald Trump’s support to convene a meeting between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United states. This initiative underscores the importance of the U.S. role in the region.
Anwar addressed the 46th ASEAN Summit Plenary Session on Monday, stating his request follows a mandate from the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in langkawi earlier in the year. the goal is to foster a stronger ASEAN-U.S. relationship.
“I have taken the liberty also to write to President Trump to seek his understanding to organize a US-Asean meeting,which means we observe seriously the spirit of centrality,” said Anwar,emphasizing ASEAN’s commitment to regional cooperation and the importance of the United States’ involvement.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said May 25 that Malaysia, as the 2025 ASEAN chair, is awaiting confirmation from the U.S. regarding the proposed date for the ASEAN-U.S.Special Summit. Hasan also noted an April 5 phone call with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where they discussed Malaysia-U.S. bilateral relations within the Thorough Cooperation Framework.
