  • The ⁢A20 chip⁢ will ⁢debut in‍ the iPhone 18 series.
  • New packaging boosts performance and reduces power use.

Apple’s iPhone 18 to Feature Redesigned ⁢A20 Chip

Updated June 4, 2025

Apple is set⁢ to revamp its ‍chip design for the iPhone 18, potentially marking‍ the first use of advanced multi-chip packaging in its⁣ mobile devices. This move aims to enhance performance and efficiency in the next generation of iPhones.

According to Jeff Pu, an analyst at‍ GF ⁣Securities, the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the‍ rumored iPhone 18 fold are expected to feature Apple’s A20 chip. This chip will be built using TSMC‘s‍ second-generation⁤ 2nm process (N2).

The A20 chip will use Wafer-Level Multi-Chip⁢ Module (WMCM) packaging. This technology integrates components‍ like the SoC and DRAM directly at the wafer level before the chips are separated. This method⁣ connects the dies without needing an interposer or substrate, improving ⁢thermal and signal integrity.

The next-generation chip⁢ will be smaller and more power-efficient, ‍thanks to the N2 process. The closer proximity to onboard memory will ⁢improve ⁤performance and potentially⁤ lower power ⁤consumption for AI processing ⁤and high-end gaming.

TSMC is reportedly building a⁢ dedicated WMCM production line and⁣ expects to ramp up production by 2027.

TSMC will establish a dedicated WMCM production line at its AP7, ⁤leveraging equipment and process similar to CoWoS-L without ⁢on-substrate.We see TSMC is ‍preparing capacity of ⁢up to 50KPM by ⁤end of 2026 ‍and estimate ‍the capacity to reach 110-120KPM by end-2027, due⁣ to the increase⁣ in adoption.

This new chip design represents a meaningful advancement for Apple, similar to its early adoption of 3nm technology. It also⁣ signals ⁣a broader⁢ trend in the‍ mobile market, bringing technologies previously used in data‍ centers and AI accelerators to ⁤smartphones.

What’s next

The iPhone 18 ⁢Fold may serve as a testbed for⁤ this next-generation silicon packaging, indicating Apple’s intention to use its most innovative hardware for its foldable ⁣devices.
