Apple Introduces ‘Double Tap’ Function with watchOS Update for Apple Watch Series

Apple has introduced a new ‘double tap’ function through an update to its watchOS. The company announced on the 26th that starting today, Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 users will be able to utilize this new gesture with the release of watchOS 10.1.

The double tap gesture allows users to control their Apple Watch with just one hand, without touching the display. By double-tapping their index finger and thumb on the hand wearing the watch, users can perform commonly used actions quickly and conveniently.

Some of the basic actions that can be performed with the double tap gesture include opening the Smart Stack, answering and ending calls, viewing messages in notifications (with the ability to scroll through long notifications and reply with dictation or send messages), managing timers and alarms, controlling music playback, switching to the altitude screen in the Compass app, and even using the Apple Watch as a remote control for the iPhone’s camera.

Apple emphasizes that this new gesture complements the existing gestures on the Apple Watch, such as tapping, swiping, raising to wake, and covering to silence.

According to Apple, the double tap gesture can be used anytime the display is awake, without significantly impacting the battery life of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, which can last up to 18 and 36 hours, respectively.

In addition, watchOS 10.1 is now available for Apple Watch Series 4 and newer models. Users will need an iPhone XS or later models with iOS 17 installed to use this update. The double tap gesture is enabled by default on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 with watchOS 10.1 and can be disabled in the settings if desired.

Overall, Apple’s introduction of the double tap gesture adds another convenient way for users to interact with their Apple Watches, further enhancing the overall user experience.
