Apple News Testing New Crossword Puzzle Game Quartiles for iOS 17.5

Apple News was spotted testing a new crossword puzzle, and the image shows a screenshot of the game program discovered by the website Gadget Hacks.

Apple News Apple News is testing a new game called Quartiles for iOS 17.5, which requires players to form a 20-syllable grid into five four-syllable words. According to the website Gadget Hacks, Quartiles’ interface is very similar to the latest New York Times hit game, Connections.

If you look closely, quartiles are not exactly like connections. In Connections you need to organize 16 words into four related categories, each with 4 words. Quartiles is probably closer to a game like Boggle, in that you test your ability to combine parts into words. The tech website TechCrunch pointed out that people these days seem to find it very interesting to find four-syllable words, and Connections has become the second most popular game in the New York Times, second only to another crossword game, Wordle.

Last year, Apple added crosswords and mini-crosswords for Apple News+ subscribers. It may seem strange that a news program continues to invest in gaming, but that’s one way the New York Times has succeeded. The newspaper acquired the Wordle game for an undisclosed seven-figure sum in 2022, bringing it “tens of millions” of new users in just one quarter. In recent months, data from the New York Times shows that users have spent more time playing games than reading the news. News from this newspaper
