The lack of a separate pinning feature was disappointing, so Apple released a diary application (app) in which artificial intelligence (AI) recommends diary topics via the iOS 17.2 update on 12. The app diary has a very simple and intuitive user interface (UI). /Journalist Seo Da-bin

[더팩트ㅣ서다빈 인턴기자] Mr. A, an office worker in his 20s, was thinking of buying a New Year’s diary in preparation for the new year when he heard that a “Diary” app had been added to the iPhone. I’ve also heard that Apple’s journal app lets you leave journals and photos together. Until now, Mr. A has been unable to leave photos in a paper diary, so he filled the diary by drawing the pictures himself. Diaries in the age of artificial intelligence can contain both photos and music and are seen as a break from the mold of existing analog diaries. However, it is emphasized that there are areas that need improvement in the initial release.

Apple released the journal app via iOS 17.2 update on 12th. It has been six months since it was first showcased under the name “Journal” at the World Developers Conference (WWDC 2023) held in California, US , last June. Apple’s goal is to expand “AI on device” services on a large scale in line with the digital age, starting with daily recorded content that combines mobile phone information such as photos, videos, audio recordings and location.

The most notable feature of Apple’s diary app is that it is powered by on-device AI. On-device AI refers to AI technology that processes and analyzes data on the user’s device without access to the Internet or the cloud. The AI analyzes data such as user photos and location information within the app itself and recommends personalized topics to users. This app is useful for people who want to keep a diary, but have trouble deciding what to write when they open it.

Mr. A, who has been keeping a diary with a pen for about 10 years, drew a picture on a paper diary every time he wanted to record a photo. Apple’s Journal app lets you add up to 13 photos and videos per journal. /Journalist Seo Da-bin

The diary app has a very simple and intuitive user interface (UI). When I pressed the “More” button located at the bottom of the screen, I was able to write a journal right away. I felt there was a high degree of freedom. By clicking on the text you can add effects such as font weight, underline and strikethrough. If you select “Recent Items”, you can see at a glance the songs you’ve listened to and exercise recordings. You can add up to 13 photos and videos to each journal. Rather than focusing on decorating the diary with various stickers and images, it seemed like it could appeal to users who want to keep short, accurate daily records.

The features of the diary app have become even more important with artificial intelligence on the device. For example, when I selected the walking exercise recording on the 19th, an icon appeared indicating where I had exercised and the number of steps. The journal app helped people choose their writing by asking questions like “Does this walking exercise make you feel refreshed?” and “Is there anything that keeps coming to mind as you walk?” It was also effective for uncovering past memories by connecting with a photography app. When I clicked “Like” on a photo taken during my trip to Thailand last June, a photo from my trip to Thailand appeared as a recommended journal entry for that day and the phrase “What Pattaya Beach Was Like ?”

The journal app also provided journaling material through questions such as “What is the most interesting story you heard this month?” and “Think of a song that you really like. How did you feel when you heard that song for the first time?” Even on days when I forgot to journal in my busy daily life, I was able to remember my day at all times based on the cell phone data in my hand and the app’s ability to send me a notification when I set a specific day and time as my journal writing time was also effective. . For the past week, when the diary alarm went off at 8pm every day, I was able to look at the photos and videos taken throughout the day and simply organize my thoughts with the recommended topics. Since there was content to enter in the diary and a smartphone record of every hour of the day, it only took 10 minutes to write the diary.

There is no separate lock feature in the diary app itself. When I tried to lock Journal with my unlocked iPhone device, a message appeared that said, “To lock Journal, you must set a device password in settings.” /Journalist Seo Da-bin

However, during use, I found it disappointing that the journal app itself doesn’t have a separate lock feature. This is because you can access your diary, your most personal document, very easily by simply unlocking your phone. In fact, when I tried to lock the organizer while unlocking the iPhone device, the message “To lock the organizer, you must set a device password in ‘Settings'” was displayed.

The biggest benefit is that it helps you create a personalized diary by analyzing the personal information accumulated on your phone, but I couldn’t help but think that it provided too much personal information. Of course, Apple’s diary app can block access to photos and locations via settings, but if you do that, you can’t use the personalized recommendation feature, so I figured it was no different than using a regular diary app.

It was also disappointing that there were no separate search and calendar functions within the diary app. When journals pile up, the only way to find the specific journal you want to see is to scroll down on your phone, so it seems like it’ll be difficult to look through past records after records have piled up to a certain point.

This app is a core app supported by Apple, but is not currently available on iPad or Mac. /Player provided

Some users have also cited the fact that the diary app is only supported on iPhone as an inconvenience. This app is a basic app supported by Apple, but is currently not available on iPad or Mac. Lee Ye-jin (28), an office worker who was waiting for the release of the planner app even before it was launched in Korea, expressed his disappointment, saying, “It’s not easy to leave a long message on a smartphone, but I can’t write a long diary because it’s not compatible with the iPad.”

Some are analyzing that Apple will open a real era of on-device artificial intelligence in mobile devices, starting with the launch of this diary app. According to foreign media such as Bloomberg News, Apple has formed a small team of engineers and developed a generative artificial intelligence model called “Apple GPT” (working title). This model is based on the large-scale language model “Ajax”. The industry predicts that “Apple GPT” will be used in combination with “Siri”, Apple’s mobile AI assistant.
