Archaeologists Unearth 1,000-Year-Old Mummy in Bustling Peru Capital
A remarkably well-preserved mummy, believed to be from the ‘Ichima’ period, has been uncovered in the midst of Peru’s bustling capital, Lima. The discovery was announced by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, revealing that the mummy was found alongside pottery and textiles in the ruins of Huaca Puclina, located in the vibrant district of Miraflores.
The adult mummy was discovered in a sitting position, with the legs drawn up to the upper body. It has been described as having long, well-preserved brown hair and an intact facial jawbone. Leading the excavation, archaeologist Mireya Ganoza suggests that the mummy belonged to the Incas, who inhabited the region during the ‘Ichima’ period before establishing their civilization in the area.
Huaca Puclana, situated near the affluent residential area of downtown Lima, is an archaeological site dating back to the years between 200 and 700 AD. However, due to neglect in previous decades, some of the ruins, including the pyramids, have suffered partial damage. Efforts to research and conserve the site have been ongoing since the 1980s, shedding light on the ancient civilizations that once thrived in the region.
Lima itself is home to more than 400 archaeological sites, and experts anticipate that this recent discovery will greatly contribute to the understanding of the Ichima civilization. With a population of over 8 million, the bustling urban center continues to unveil traces of its rich ancient past.
