NYPD Officer and Bystander Injured in Queens Shooting Incident
An NYPD officer and a bystander were shot in Queens on Wednesday evening. The shooter, identified as Gary Worthy, had just committed armed robberies at two local stores.
The incident began around 5:30 p.m. at a deli on Hillside Avenue, where Worthy threatened customers and staff with a black revolver while demanding money. He fired a shot before fleeing the scene.
Witnesses spotted Worthy near Jamaica Avenue and 160th Street. When officers located him, they ordered him to stop and drop his weapon. Worthy allegedly fired at the officers, injuring one officer in the thigh. The officer returned fire, striking Worthy in the face.
A 26-year-old woman was also shot, though it remains unclear who fired the shot that hit her.
Worthy was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he later died. Mayor Eric Adams expressed frustration over the incident, highlighting Worthy’s history of violent offenses and prior gun arrests.
The injured officer, Rich Wong, age 36, was also transported to Jamaica Hospital. He is expected to be released soon.
This situation underscores concerns about public safety and the criminal justice system in New York City.
