Trump’s Military⁤ Parade Set for⁢ President’s Birthday Amidst Protests and Weather Concerns

⁤ ‍Updated ⁢June 14,⁤ 2025

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald‍ Trump’s highly anticipated military parade is scheduled to proceed ⁢from the Lincoln Memorial on Saturday evening, showcasing tanks, marching bands, and thousands⁢ of ‍troops. The event coincides ⁤with⁤ Trump’s‍ 79th birthday and⁤ the Army’s 250th‍ anniversary celebration.

Though, the parade faces potential disruptions from both inclement weather and planned protests across the nation. The event has already sparked controversy‍ due ⁤to its estimated $45 million price tag and concerns that heavy tanks could damage city streets. The Army has implemented measures, such as laying down metal plates, to mitigate⁣ potential damage.

The‍ parade occurs amidst growing scrutiny of Trump’s‍ use of the military. He has deployed the national Guard and Marines to provide security during immigration protests in Los Angeles, prompting lawsuits and accusations of politicizing the armed⁣ forces. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has filed a lawsuit to halt the deployments, marking ⁣the first time in 60 years a president has activated the National Guard on federal orders within a state without the governor’s consent.

Earlier in the week, Trump’s⁤ speech at fort Bragg raised eyebrows⁣ when members of the 82nd Airborne Division ⁢appeared to‍ boo and cheer during his remarks, ⁣which included criticism of President Joe Biden. A “Make America Great Again” merchandise stand was also present, selling souvenirs to troops in uniform.

Concerns have been raised by members of Congress ⁣and military leaders regarding potential political displays during the Fort Bragg speech, as Defense Department doctrine prohibits troops from engaging in political ⁣activity ⁣while ⁤in⁣ uniform.

Despite concerns about the parade’s cost, weather forecast, and ⁣potential protests,Trump remains ⁤enthusiastic. He stated on social media that the weather “doesn’t affect the‍ tanks⁢ at all” and warned protesters that “they will be met with very big force.”

The “No Kings” rallies, planned in⁣ numerous cities nationwide, aim to counter what organizers perceive as Trump’s self-aggrandizing plans. While no ⁢protests are scheduled in⁤ Washington, D.C., officials ⁣have stated they ⁤have no indication of any security threat.

According to an AP-NORC poll, ⁣approximately 60%⁣ of Americans⁣ believe the‍ parade is “not a good use” of government funds.

The⁤ parade will proceed along Constitution Avenue, already secured with fencing and barriers. The event will feature Army helicopters and ⁢aircraft,⁣ a parachute jump,⁤ a concert by Lee Greenwood, and fireworks.

The parade’s schedule could be affected by expected rain⁣ and potential thunderstorms. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated‍ the parade ⁤will proceed “rain or shine” but could be delayed due to lightning.

the parade fulfills Trump’s desire for a large-scale military display,⁢ inspired ⁤by the Bastille Day‍ parade ⁢he witnessed in France in 2017. The Army anticipates approximately 200,000 attendees for the festival and parade, which⁣ will begin around 9:30 a.m. EDT and include fitness competitions, demonstrations, equipment‍ displays, music, and a cake-cutting ceremony.

The ‍parade is scheduled to commence at 6:30 p.m. EDT, with some units starting at the Pentagon‍ to avoid ⁣having heavy tanks cross a bridge. The march will be divided into historical sections, featuring equipment and troops in period dress.

The parade will involve 6,169 soldiers, ⁣128 Army tanks and armored vehicles, and ⁣62 aircraft. Trump will swear in 250 new or reenlisting troops, followed by a parachute jump by the Army’s⁤ Golden Knights, a ⁣concert, and fireworks.

What’s next

The ⁤Army will assess the parade’s impact on infrastructure and public⁣ opinion to inform future celebrations and events.
