Investigation and Police Response at the Jacksonville Beach Pier
According to a Jacksonville Beach Police Department statement cited by News4JAX, officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 9:50 p.m. Wednesday after receiving reports of a disturbance near the pier. Responding personnel discovered a man’s body underneath the pier structure in the 500 block of Beach Proper North, as reported by Hoodline. Officers immediately cordoned off the area with police tape, maintaining a presence through the overnight hours to process the scene. The affected block includes the pier entrance, an adjoining boardwalk, a public parking lot, and nearby beach access corridors.
Public Safety Enforcement and Prior Incidents in the Area
The stretch of Beach Proper North where the body was found has a documented history of heightened law enforcement attention. On August 14, Jacksonville Beach officers conducted a sleeping-in-public investigation in the same block, resulting in the arrest of a non-compliant registered sexual offender, according to the Jacksonville Beach Police Department. That enforcement aligns with Florida House Bill 1365, a state law effective in October 2024 that prohibits municipalities from allowing public camping or sleeping on beaches and sidewalks.
In addition to state-mandated camping regulations, municipal rules enforce specific curfew hours for the pier grounds. Jacksonville Beach Police Department regulations set juvenile curfew hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., barring unaccompanied minors from the pier and beach access points during the overnight hours. Local law enforcement also utilizes technological monitoring tools, including Flock Safety license plate readers, overhead drones, and surveillance cameras, to monitor pier corridors and surrounding access points, per News4JAX reporting.

History of the Jacksonville Beach Fishing Pier
The 1,300-foot Jacksonville Beach Fishing Pier reopened in July 2022 following extensive structural repairs necessitated by damage from Hurricanes Matthew and Irma, according to First Coast News. It serves as the city’s central gathering point for major community events, such as the Fourth of July fireworks show, which requires a two-block public safety perimeter as documented by Hoodline.
The structure has also been the site of prior violence. In 2024, an unpermitted gathering underneath the pier escalated into a shooting that killed a 21-year-old man and injured three others. That unsolved case prompted the Jacksonville Beach Police Department to institute zero-tolerance crowd operations each spring, deploying extra officers and partner agencies near the boardwalk during peak seasons.
