JAKARTA, Indonesia ⁤– three police vehicles were torched ‍by⁢ a crowd⁤ in⁢ Kampung Baru, Harjamukti, Depok, West Java, on Friday, April 18,​ 2025, as officers attempted to apprehend⁢ a local community association‌ leader⁣ suspected of ⁣persecution. Two suspects were taken into custody.

Depok Metro Police Chief Commissioner​ Abdul Waras stated that the two suspects are now in the custody of ​the Jakarta Metropolitan Police. “As ⁤of this​ morning, the suspects⁤ are ‍being detained,” Waras said Sunday.⁣ He confirmed the case is now under the jurisdiction of the Metro Jaya regional Police.

The confrontation unfolded when the Depok‌ Metro Police Criminal Examination unit sought to ‍bring in suspects and witnesses related to alleged crimes​ in Kampung Baru. ‍

According to police reports, ⁣the individuals were ⁢wanted in connection ⁣to Article 351 and ⁢335 of⁤ the‍ Criminal Code, as well as the ​Emergency Law on firearms. The charges relate to property damage, acts of‌ violence,⁤ and illegal posession of firearms.

AKBP Bambang Prakoso, Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Depok metro Police, told reporters that the⁢ suspect​ had been summoned twice for⁣ questioning but failed to appear. “A warrant was then issued ⁤to bring him in for a statement at the ​Depok Metro Police‍ headquarters,” Prakoso said.

Around 1:30 a.m.⁣ local time, a team of 14 officers arrived at the ​location to‌ apprehend the⁤ suspect. However, they were met ⁤with ‍resistance from local residents.

“Upon successfully locating ⁢the suspect, officers encountered ‍resistance from the community,” Prakoso⁤ stated.

The situation quickly⁢ escalated as residents ‍clashed with the ‌police. “there was⁣ a ‍fierce ‍struggle, and the commotion drew the‌ attention of the surrounding⁢ community, who then joined ‌in⁤ the attack on‍ our personnel,”⁢ Prakoso explained.

Despite‌ the resistance, police managed to secure the suspect and transport him toward the Depok Metro Police station. As the police convoy, consisting of four vehicles, attempted to leave, they were pursued ‍by residents, ultimately​ trapping‌ three of ​the⁣ police⁤ cars.

“While one car managed to escape and reach the‌ police station,⁣ the remaining⁤ three​ vehicles were cornered,” Prakoso⁤ said.

Bambang confirmed ‌that the⁣ three stranded⁢ police cars were​ afterward set ablaze and damaged​ by the residents.

While⁤ some ⁣officers sustained minor injuries during the incident, no serious injuries were reported. “Fortunately, none of our personnel suffered any significant injuries,” Prakoso added.
