Arsenal are exploring a late transfer move for Lyon winger Malick Fofana as the Premier League club scrambles to secure attacking reinforcements before the summer window closes, according to reports in France. The north London side spent much of the summer pursuing a marquee signing on the left flank, identifying Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior as their primary target, according to RMC Sport and Metro. Those hopes ended when the Brazilian signed a new long-term contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, forcing the Gunners to alter their recruitment strategy as deadlines loom.
Financial Pressure at Lyon Opens Door for Premier League Switch
Lyon find themselves needing to sell players to alleviate financial difficulties following their failure to qualify for the Champions League, opening the door for a late departure for their most valuable asset. Fofana has recorded 19 goals and eight assists in 84 appearances across all competitions since joining the French outfit from boyhood club Gent in 2024. According to RMC Sport, Arsenal have made direct enquiries to establish the conditions required to bring the 21-year-old winger to the Premier League. Crystal Palace already hold an agreement in place with Lyon for the Belgian international, but the player has rejected a proposed switch to Selhurst Park, clearing the path for other suitors. The Athletic reporter David Ornstein notes that Fofana is firmly on Arsenal’s radar and has already held private conversations with manager Mikel Arteta regarding a potential move to the Emirates Stadium.

Italian club Roma also tracked the player’s situation in recent weeks, though the lure of joining the Premier League champions could prove decisive.
Fofana has earned five caps for the Belgium national team, though he missed selection for Rudi Garcia’s World Cup squad earlier this summer. His current contract with Lyon runs until June 2028.
Arsenal’s search for a winger gains urgency as Leandro Trossard’s departure leaves a void, while Gabriel Martinelli’s impending move to Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal further thins Mikel Arteta’s wide options. Christos Tzolis remains the club’s only attacking addition of the summer window.

the Arsenal head coach said, as reported by Metro. There are areas that we have to improve to hit those numbers. And if it’s not with sales, because maybe we don’t want… we have to sell what we want to sell as well, not just to sell. And then when we want to sell as well, we have to be very careful because some of the assets, after maybe they grow and we still want them.
