Gabriel Jesus believes Arsenal’s relative lack of experience in winning major trophies has been a key factor in their recent Premier League title challenges falling short, but remains “very confident” the Gunners can finally lift the trophy this season. The Brazilian forward draws a comparison to his time at Manchester City, where a core of experienced players helped establish a winning mentality.

Arsenal have finished second in the Premier League for the past three consecutive seasons and recently lost the Carabao Cup final, consistently coming close but ultimately failing to secure silverware. Jesus, speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Meets podcast, highlighted the difference in experience between the current Arsenal squad and the teams he played with at City.

“After the first one it was easy, you know? There was a mix of ten or more players who were very experienced, more than 32 years old, but they all said, ‘ok, I want it’.”

Jesus explained that once Manchester City had broken through and won their first title, the team’s winning mentality made subsequent successes easier to achieve. He believes a similar breakthrough is needed at Arsenal, where the squad is largely comprised of younger players who haven’t yet experienced the feeling of lifting a Premier League trophy.

“Today at Arsenal, it is more young players. Obviously, they never won the Premier League before, but it is coming, I hope and then everything will change,” Jesus said. “We win the first Premier League, then everything will be much easier because the pressure is still there.”

The 26-year-old forward also pointed to a frustrating 2-2 draw against Wolves in February as a moment where Arsenal’s inexperience showed, with the team questioning their mentality after dropping points. This match served as a reminder of the mental fortitude required to sustain a title challenge.

Arteta Fostering Belief

Mikel Arteta appears to be actively working to instill that winning mentality within the squad. According to reporting from mirror.co.uk, Arteta has been focused on building belief among his players, emphasizing their ability to compete for and win the Premier League title. The manager’s efforts seem to be resonating with the team, as they continue to push for the top spot.

Declan Rice, Arsenal’s record signing, has also been praised for his impact on the team. Jesus described Rice as a player who “can do everything,” and lauded his relentless work ethic, stating, “He’s the type of player that can do everything. We call him a horse, he cannot be stopped.” This sentiment highlights the positive influence Rice is having both on and off the pitch.

Steven Gerrard, speaking on the Smiths Brothers podcast, even suggested that Liverpool should have pursued Rice before Arsenal secured his signature, acknowledging the midfielder’s quality and potential impact. Gerrard stated, “He’s maybe one we should have tried to grab from West Ham. I don’t know whether we did or not, but I think he’d have been brilliant for us.”

Title Race Heats Up

Despite facing a challenging January transfer window with several key players sidelined due to injury, including Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori, Arsenal remain firmly in the title race. The club is reportedly considering defensive reinforcements, but may face competition from Manchester City for Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo.

Jesus’s confidence in Arsenal’s title chances is echoed throughout the team, and with a crucial run of fixtures ahead, the Gunners will be hoping to translate that belief into results. The upcoming matches will be pivotal in determining whether Arsenal can finally overcome their recent near misses and lift the Premier League trophy.

The Brazilian forward’s experience at Manchester City provides a valuable perspective, and his belief that a first title can unlock a winning mentality is a sentiment shared by many at the Emirates Stadium. As Arsenal continue their pursuit of glory, the lessons learned from past campaigns and the influence of experienced players like Jesus and Rice will be crucial to their success.
