Updated June 10, 2025
arvid Lindblad, a rising star in Red Bull’s junior program, has been granted a Formula 1 superlicence by the FIA ahead of his 18th birthday. The decision, made after a World Motor Sport Council meeting in Macau, acknowledges Lindblad’s demonstrated skill and maturity in single-seater competitions.
Lindblad, currently third in the Formula 2 championship with a recent feature race victory in Spain, dose not turn 18 untill Aug. 8, the standard minimum age for holding a superlicence. Though, he has already accumulated sufficient points through his junior formula success to qualify.
This early superlicence makes Lindblad eligible for free practice sessions and positions him as a reserve driver for both Red Bull and Racing Bulls. The latter role gains importance given Max Verstappen’s current proximity to a superlicence suspension.
While the application for Lindblad’s superlicence predates Verstappen’s recent penalty points, Lindblad offers an alternative to Ayuma Iwasa, the current reserve driver competing in Japan’s Super Formula. Lindblad is considered a strong candidate for a racing Bulls seat in 2026.
Red Bull currently has four F1 drivers under contract: Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda at the senior team, and Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson driving for the junior team.
What’s next
Lindblad is expected to participate in free practice sessions before the August break, further solidifying his readiness for a potential future in Formula 1. His performance will be closely watched as he aims to secure a full-time seat in the coming years.
