Asbestos Pollution From Austrian Mines Threatens Western Hungary

A significant environmental and public health crisis has emerged in Western Hungary following the discovery of asbestos-contaminated crushed stone used in road construction. The contamination, which originated from Austrian mines, has affected multiple locations in Vas County, including extensive residential areas in Szombathely.

The scale of the issue became apparent in mid-April 2026, after official investigations revealed that crushed stone used in the roadbeds of the Oladi-plató area in Szombathely contained hazardous levels of asbestos. According to reports from Vas Média, the contamination levels in these areas multiple times exceed health safety limits.

Impact in Szombathely

The Vas County Government Office notified city officials on April 13, 2026, that significant asbestos content was detected in streets covered with crushed stone within the residential zone of the Oladi-plató. The affected area spans approximately 12 kilometers of road, impacting more than 1,100 residents. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of asbestos in six out of 12 samples, with periodic measurements showing air quality levels that exceeded safety limits several times over. Local authorities and the government office have filed police reports citing environmental damage, endangerment of public safety, and endangerment through professional negligence. The investigation is being supervised by the Vas County Chief Prosecutor’s Office.

Source of the Contamination

The contaminated material originated from Austrian mines that were closed specifically due to their asbestos content. Investigations indicate that the shipments were accompanied years ago by documentation stating the material contained no dangerous components, meaning users were unaware the stone was carcinogenic.

The discovery was triggered by an initial investigation of a parking lot in Bozsok following a report from Greenpeace. This lead subsequently connected the contaminated materials to Szombathely and other settlements within Vas County.

Emergency Measures and Public Health

City leadership has implemented several immediate measures to mitigate the risk of asbestos fibers becoming airborne, which experts identify as the primary danger to human health.
