Datuk seri Mohamad hasan, Malaysia’s Foreign Minister, urged for a more equitable⁤ international system that prioritizes ⁢the needs and voices of the Global South during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly.⁤ He highlighted the⁣ paradox of developing ⁢nations being home ⁣to the world’s most vulnerable populations while remaining marginalized in global decision-making.

Myanmar Crisis and ASEAN’s Role

Speaking at the United Nations,Mohamad Hasan emphasized the importance of ASEAN’s efforts to restore credibility to the Five-Point Consensus regarding Myanmar. He expressed deep ⁤disappointment over broken ceasefires and ongoing violence endangering civilians within the country. ⁢ He stressed that ‌myanmar’s leaders⁤ must recognize their nation’s interconnectedness ⁣with the broader region, stating, “Those in power have a responsibility to remember that Myanmar is part of a region, not an isolated country.”

The Five-Point Consensus, adopted by ASEAN leaders‌ in April 2021, calls for an immediate cessation of violence in Myanmar, constructive dialog among all parties concerned, the appointment of a special ASEAN envoy, humanitarian assistance, and the special envoy’s visit to Myanmar. The crisis in Myanmar began with a military coup on february⁢ 1, ⁣2021, overthrowing the democratically elected government led‍ by ⁤Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Global⁤ South’s Underrepresentation

Mohamad Hasan underscored the systemic imbalances facing the Global South, stating that despite representing the world’s majority, these‍ nations are “under-represented in decision-making, under-served in development financing, and sidelined in global governance.”⁤ He argued that a fairer international order is impossible ⁤without centering the global South’s priorities.

He asserted that the voices, needs, and aspirations of the Global South ‌are not secondary and must be given due ⁤consideration. Malaysia, he affirmed, will continue to advocate for dignity, equity, and opportunity for⁤ all developing ‌nations.
