Sharma, previously head of product development at Microsoft CoreAI, steps into the role as Spencer retires after decades leading the Xbox division.

Sharma’s appointment marks a significant shift for Microsoft Gaming. While Spencer was a long-standing figure within the gaming community, Sharma comes from a background focused on platform building and scaling services that reach billions of users, having previously held leadership positions at Instacart and Meta. She acknowledges having “a lot to learn” but views her outsider perspective as an asset, emphasizing a commitment to being “grounded in what the community is telling us.”

In an internal memo and subsequent interview with Variety, Sharma outlined three core commitments: “great games,” “the return of Xbox,” and “the future of play.” Defining what constitutes a “great game” for Sharma centers on emotional resonance and a unique artistic vision. She cited Campo Santo’s 2016 title, “Firewatch,” as an example of a game that evoked a strong emotional response, a quality she intends to prioritize in future development.

Sharma’s background in artificial intelligence has naturally prompted questions about her vision for AI’s role in game development. Her stance is direct: “no tolerance for bad AI.” She recognizes AI as a potential “growth engine” for the gaming industry, but firmly believes that compelling narratives and experiences are ultimately created by human developers.
