Ashley Callingbull: First Indigenous Woman to Represent Canada at Miss Universe – A Historic Honor
Ashley Callingbull made history as the first Indigenous woman to win the title of Miss Universe Canada. She achieved this milestone on July 27, and later competed in the 73rd Miss Universe pageant, where she reached the top 12 among contestants from various countries.
Before becoming Miss Universe Canada, Ashley faced many challenges. When she was young, she lived in difficult circumstances, experiencing poverty and abuse. Despite these hardships, she found strength through her grandparents, who practiced traditional Indigenous healing. They taught her about spirituality and the importance of cultural roots.
Ashley began participating in pageants as a way to connect with her community and celebrate her heritage. She participated in traditional pageants on her reserve, winning multiple titles. However, she encountered racism and faced challenges due to a lack of support and funding.
After the Miss Universe organization eliminated the age limit for contestants, Ashley saw an opportunity to fulfill her dream. She trained hard, putting her heart and soul into her preparation. During the Miss Universe pageant, she spoke out about the issues facing Indigenous women, advocating for their rights and representation.
Ashley aims to use her platform to bring attention to the struggles of Indigenous women, particularly the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women. She wants the world to recognize the strength and success of Indigenous women. Ashley is not merely a representative; she is determined to speak out and make a difference, ensuring that Indigenous voices are heard.
