Ashwin Reveals Factors Behind International Retirement Decision
CHENNAI, India – Ravichandran Ashwin, the veteran Indian off-spinner, disclosed that a combination of factors led to his decision to retire from international cricket during the tour of Australia. The 38-year-old, second-highest wicket-taker for India in Test matches with 537, initially considered calling it quits after his 100th Test match in March 2024.
Family Time a Key Consideration
Speaking on a podcast, Ashwin told Mike Hussey, a fellow member of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), that not being selected for the first Test against Australia in Perth, where Washington Sundar was preferred, considerably influenced his thinking. While ashwin played the second Test in Adelaide, he was later left out of the lineup for the third Test at the Gabba, where he ultimately announced his retirement.
Ashwin elaborated on his thought process, stating, ”To be very honest, I wanted to do it after my 100th Test (in Dharamsala, March 2024). And then I thought, Ok, let me give it a go in the home season… I thought I’d probably close off with the chennai Test here (against bangladesh). I ended up getting a six-wicket haul and a hundred. So its very tough to quit when you’re doing very well.”
Australia Tour and Emotional Toll
Despite a strong performance in his previous tour of Australia, Ashwin acknowledged the growing challenges of being away from his family. “I was having a lot of fun, but the whole hard yards that I had to put through to put myself in the park again, physically and mentally, one of the most significant things that was pulling me down was the family time,” he said.
The decision to retire solidified when he was not included in the starting eleven for the Perth Test. “And when I didn’t start in Perth, it was like, okay, this whole circle keeps going again. People add very little value to what you’re going through emotionally,” Ashwin explained. “They don’t really consider that because your emotions are yours, and it doesn’t matter to anybody else.So I had been contemplating that, and then I thought, okay, maybe it is indeed time.”
Ashwin is currently playing for CSK in the ongoing season.
