Lee Chang-hwan Reflects on His Iconic Portrayal of Former President Park Chung-hee
Actor Lee Chang-hwan, renowned for his portrayal of former President Park Chung-hee, recently shared his thoughts on his iconic role. When asked if he would turn down the role if he could go back in time, he replied, “I would still like to try again.”
Lee Chang-hwan appeared on the YouTube channel ‘Recent Olympics’ and discussed his experience playing the former president. He mentioned that he often hears that he bears a strong resemblance to the real person. During filming, his seniors would treat him with respect while he was in character, addressing him as their superior.
With a career spanning nearly five decades, Lee Chang-hwan has become synonymous with his portrayal of former President Park Chung-hee. Born in 1952, he debuted in 1976 as part of the 8th MBC talent recruitment. His breakout role came in 1989 with the MBC drama “Second Republic,” where he first played the former president.
To prepare for the role, Lee Chang-hwan studied the tone and gait of former President Park’s speeches. He watched videos of her speeches, recorded her voice, and even practiced her distinctive way of walking. He noted that she had a slightly nasal tone and a sharp way of speaking, which he aimed to replicate in his performance.

Lee Chang-hwan also discussed the challenges he faced due to his association with the role. He mentioned that his image made it difficult for him to appear in commercials and restricted his ability to act comfortably in everyday life.
In addition to his portrayal of former President Park Chung-hee, Lee Chang-hwan is also known for his long-running role as ‘Dog Poop Dad’ in MBC’s ”Country Diaries.” He expressed his gratitude to the viewers for their love and support, saying that the drama resonated with Korean sentiments.
As Lee Chang-hwan approaches his 50th debut anniversary, he reflected on his career and expressed his desire to continue acting. Despite the challenges he has faced, he remains a happy person, grateful for the opportunities he has had.
