Aston Villa secured a 3-1 victory against Viking at Villa Park, marking their third win in the UEFA Champions League. Ross Barkley opened the scoring with a header in the first half before Emiliano Buendía added a second from the penalty spot, lifting Unai Emery’s side to nine points from three matches in the league phase.
Ross Barkley and Emiliano Buendía Build First-Half Lead
Villa controlled the opening period despite deploying a makeshift lineup that included João Gomes at right-back, according to the report. Shortly after, an inswinging corner from 18-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye found Barkley, who nodded past Viking goalkeeper Arild Østbø in the 23rd minute for his third goal of the European campaign.
The goal marked Buendía’s fourth consecutive scoring appearance in European competition, giving the hosts a comfortable advantage at halftime.
Alysson Forces Own Goal Before Peter Christiansen Responds
Alysson played a central role in Villa’s third goal just after the hour mark. The young winger raced through from deep and delivered a cross that Viking defender Henrik Heggheim inadvertently turned past his own goalkeeper in the 62nd minute. The sequence briefly propelled Villa to the summit of the Champions League standings on goal difference.
Viking, which secured a 3-3 draw against Bayern Munich the previous week, mounted a stronger challenge after the interval. Head coach Morten Jensen noted in his post-match press conference that his team showed too much respect initially before pressing Villa’s midfield and defense during the second half, stating: The second half was much more like Viking wants to be. That is something that we can build on for the future.
Viking boss also stated: It is the next level for us as a team and really great to see the team get a goal at Villa Park in front of over 2,000 Norwegian fans.
The visitors rewarded their traveling supporters when Kristoffer Askildsen supplied a cross that Peter Christiansen met with a powerful volley in the 84th minute. A subsequent VAR review confirmed the strike, denying Villa a clean sheet and dropping them to second place in the table behind Paris Saint-Germain.

Unai Emery Balances Squad Challenges Ahead
Manager Unai Emery managed his squad through several roster absences for the fixture. Aston Villa played without Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Johan Manzambi, who sustained injuries during a 1-0 Premier League victory against Newcastle United, joining long-term absentees Amadou Onana and Matteo Ruggeri.
Reflecting on the performance, Emery praised the collective tactical discipline of his players and highlighted the developmental progress of younger squad members like Mbaye and Alysson. Emiliano Buendia speaking about Alysson to TNT Sports said: He was incredible. He’s showing his potential, his ability on the wing. Also Ibrahim Mbaye as well – their speed, their qualities. It’s going to help the team a lot, so it’s very important to have them and to try to help them to improve because they are young talents.
When asked about Mbaye and Alysson, Unai Emery replied: It was a step forward for both players in our idea, so really happy.
There was praise too for Alejandro Garnacho who played his best minutes
in a late cameo off the bench.

We are delighted how we are responding in our demands, respecting the competition of the Champions League and respecting the opponent, and how we are improving things.Unai Emery
Villa’s strong European start leaves them as the second-quickest team to reach 20 victories in the European Cup, achieving the milestone in 30 matches compared to Real Madrid’s 29. Whether this sustained momentum will withstand forthcoming fixtures, including a match against Barcelona, is uncertain as the league phase progresses.
