A gold watch left behind by American business magnate John Jacob Astor IV, who died in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, has sold at auction for 1.17 million pounds (about 2.01 billion won).

According to Bloomberg News on the 27th (local time), the gold watch worn by King Astor IV at the time of the sinking of the Titanic was sold to an American for 1.17 million pounds at an auction held by the British auction house ‘Henry Aldridge & Son ‘.

This amount is much higher than the expected winning bid price of 100,000 to 150,000 pounds (about 170 million to 260 million won).

Bloomberg News reported that it was sold for the highest price among items recovered from the Titanic.

The violin known to have been played when the Titanic sank reportedly sold for 1.1 million pounds (about 1.9 billion won) at auction in 2013.

Astor IV’s gold watch was found along with other personal effects, including gold cufflinks, when his body was recovered from the Atlantic Ocean seven days after the sinking of the Titanic.

This 14K plated pocket watch was manufactured by the American watch company Waltham. Aster IV initials ‘JJA’ are also engraved.

The auctioneer explained, “Aster IV was the richest person on board the Titanic,” adding, “At the time, his net worth was $87 million (about 120 billion won), which is equivalent to billions of dollars today .”

When the Titanic sank, Astor IV saved his pregnant wife by putting her in a lifeboat, but he stayed on the ship.
