Asus is expanding its professional creative tools ecosystem with the ProArt CaliContrO MCA02, a 3-in-1 colorimeter designed to streamline the calibration process for displays. The device combines color measurement, hardware and software calibration, and integrated display control into a single unit, targeting photographers, video editors, designers, and other professionals who rely on accurate color representation.

The ProArt CaliContrO MCA02 supports both software and hardware calibration, offering flexibility for a wide range of workflows and display technologies. Software calibration, compatible with LED, OLED, and Mini-LED panels, utilizes Asus’ ProArt Calibration software to generate ICC profiles. These profiles embed color management data at the operating system level, aiming for consistent color output across applications and connected devices. The software is available for both Windows 11+ and macOS 12+, facilitating cross-platform compatibility.

Beyond ICC Profiles: Hardware Calibration and LUT Writing

While ICC profiles are a standard approach to color management, the MCA02 also supports hardware calibration on select ProArt displays. This feature allows calibration data to be written directly to the monitor’s internal Look-Up Table (LUT). By storing color parameters within the display itself, hardware calibration aims to provide more stable and long-term color accuracy, independent of the connected computer or operating system. Asus provides compatibility listings to determine which ProArt displays support this feature.

Asus recommends recalibrating monitors every four to six weeks, or more frequently if noticeable color shifts occur. For professionals in imaging, design, or print production, more frequent calibration may be advisable to maintain color consistency. The ProArt Calibration software includes a “Color Correlation” function, allowing users to calibrate the MCA02 against a preferred reference colorimeter, aligning measurement results across multiple devices.

The MCA02 is capable of measuring luminance up to 10,000 cd/m², making it suitable for High Dynamic Range (HDR) workflows. Asus specifies a chromaticity accuracy of ±0.005 x,y and luminance accuracy of ±5 percent under standard testing conditions. The device also includes ambient light measurement and supports multiple white point presets, including D50, D55, D65, and custom settings.

Integrated Control for Enhanced Workflow

Beyond calibration, the ProArt CaliContrO incorporates features designed to streamline workflow. A built-in 5-way navigator and five shortcut keys provide direct access to a compatible monitor’s On-Screen Display (OSD), eliminating the need to use physical buttons. This allows for quick adjustments to display settings within reach.

The device also integrates Asus Dial functionality, enabling customizable shortcuts within supported creative applications. Through the Asus DisplayWidget Center software, users can switch between colorimeter, OSD control, and dial modes, and customize shortcut keys to suit their workflow. While Asus Dial and Microsoft Surface Dial functionality are primarily supported on Windows systems, the software itself is available for both Windows and macOS.

Physically, the MCA02 measures approximately 2.4 x 1.6 x 2.4 inches and weighs around 0.37 pounds. It connects via USB Type-C and requires 5V at 0.3A, consuming up to 5 watts of power. The package includes a USB Type-C cable with a counterweight, a quick start guide, and a warranty card.

With its combination of software and hardware calibration capabilities, HDR support, and integrated workflow controls, the ProArt CaliContrO MCA02 positions itself as a mid-range option for professionals seeking a more integrated color management solution within the Asus ProArt ecosystem. The device is available now for $250 through Asus’ official website and authorized retailers.
