National Security Bureau Director Kim Seong-han said at a briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office on the morning of the 23rd, “President Yoon will preside over the first session under the theme of ‘prosperity with economic growth’.”

The meeting was started by the United States in 2021 to discuss how to respond to the crisis facing the democratic camp. The second meeting will be co-hosted by Korea, the United States, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, and Zambia.

The plenary session, attended by top level figures, was held via video on the 29th, and the heads of 110 countries and international organizations such as the United Nations were invited.

The plenary session begins with opening remarks from the heads of five co-host countries, including President Yoon and US President Joe Biden. The meeting consists of five sessions chaired by the leaders of these five countries.

The next day, Korea will also hold a regional meeting on behalf of the Indo-Pacific region under the theme ‘Challenges and Successes in Preventing Corruption’. Civil society and the academic world also attend the regional meeting at ministerial level, which consists of four sessions.

Regarding the plenary session led by President Yoon, Director Kim is expected, “It will be an opportunity to improve international leadership and national prestige while showing a willingness to practice norms and values ​​on the international stage.”

“It is meaningful that Korea, which overcame war and poverty with the help of the international community and grew into a developed democratic country, contributes to the international community by sharing its knowledge,” he said.

In particular, he said, “It will serve as a venue to enhance Korea’s political credibility by showing the president’s concrete implementation of the vision of freedom and solidarity domestically and internationally.”

“It will be a milestone for Korea to show leadership in the international community and contribute to the promotion of democracy,” he added.

Meanwhile, a high-ranking official in the presidential office said regarding China’s opposition to Taiwan’s participation in the meeting, “The selection of the participating countries has gone through a process where the United States, the host country , reviews different factors and finalizes them through negotiations with the co-hosting country.”

Then, he drew a line, saying, “I wasn’t considering the dichotomy of excluding a particular country,” and “It’s not even a matter of camp conflict.”
