Athena Calderone has expanded her influence in the design world with the launch of Studio Athena Calderone’s Assembler I, a 14-piece furniture and lighting suite. The collection, which balances practicality with poise, was unveiled exclusively at The Future Perfect in New York, marking Calderone’s first standalone venture into furniture design.

The collection represents a departure from Calderone’s previous work, moving toward a style defined by dark-stained wood, lacquer, and Japanese parchment. Drawing inspiration from French Art Deco design, Assembler I focuses on materiality and proportion to create pieces that evoke a historical aesthetic refined for contemporary living.

The suite utilizes a variety of high-end materials, including nickel accents, high-gloss wood, and lacquer. A notable element of the collection is the use of a vegetable-based parchment that Calderone discovered while shopping in Kyoto. This material was used for the fabrication of lampshades and screens and previously served as the inspiration for Cadence, a wallpaper collection Calderone created in collaboration with Calico.

Several specific pieces highlight the collection’s focus on sculptural form and texture. The Courbe side table features sinuously carved lines, while a dining chair in the collection incorporates a Prelle brocade seat, which serves as a rare introduction of color and pattern for the minimalist designer. Other featured pieces include the Monde sofa, Biseau armchairs, and the Semblant pedestal.

For Calderone, the development of Assembler I was a process of gaining complete creative control over the technical aspects of production. She described the experience as akin to learning a new language.

This was the first time that my studio really owned the drawings, owned the proportions, owned the minute iterations and changes that have occurred over the past two years [of development]

This standalone collection follows years of Calderone building a lifestyle empire through her platform, EyeSwoon. Her professional portfolio already includes an interior design practice and two books, including the James Beard Award-winning Cook Beautiful.

Calderone’s transition to standalone furniture design follows previous collaborations with Crate & Barrel. Her recent work in residential design was highlighted in March 2026, when her new Tribeca apartment appeared on the cover of Architectural Digest.

The Assembler I collection is positioned not merely as a set of decorative objects, but as a coherent argument that design functions as a way of thinking about how people live.
