WEST SACRAMENTO — The Oakland Athletics halted a nine-series losing skid Sunday, defeating the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 at sutter Health Park. This marks their first series victory since May 2-4 and their first at home since April 25-27.
Manager Mark Kotsay acknowledged the importance of the win. “To finish this homestand on a winning note after losing the first three,that’s a good sign,” Kotsay said.”The club is playing better and they’re going in the right direction.”
The Athletics’ recent struggles included a 1-20 stretch, mirroring the franchise’s worst 21-game record and dropping them to last place in the American League West. Though, with 95 games remaining, the team aims to recapture its early-season form, characterized by strong offense, solid defense, and a reliable bullpen.
Shortstop Jacob Wilson, a standout rookie, continues to impress. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI single. Wilson leads all qualified Major League rookies in multiple offensive categories, including hits (93) and batting average (.372). He is vying for the lead in home runs with eight.
Kotsay praised Wilson’s durability, noting his ability to manage the demands of a full Major League season after past injuries. ”Pretty remarkable,” Kotsay said of Wilson. “He shows up now ready to play… Now you’re seeing him manage the workload.”
