Atlanta United’s Tata Martino returns to the sidelines this Saturday as the Five Stripes face Toronto FC in a pivotal Eastern Conference matchup at BMO Field, with both teams seeking to reverse disappointing seasons through contrasting trajectories.

The 2026 MLS season is in full swing, and this Saturday brings a fascinating clash at BMO Field. Toronto FC is looking to maintain their current form, while a legendary figure returns to the sidelines for a struggling Atlanta United side that is currently spiraling. Atlanta United entered the league in 2017 with a golden era that saw them lift the MLS Cup in 2018. Fast forward to 2026, and the Five Stripes are a shadow of that former glory. Their current form is nothing short of disastrous: only one win, seven losses, and one draw through nine matches.

The club made waves by bringing back Tata Martino this offseason, hoping to capture the old magic. Instead, they’ve found themselves in a situation that feels eerily similar to the Bob Bradley era in Toronto—hiring a high-profile legacy coach and surrounding him with overpriced Designated Players who aren’t delivering results. Martino recently delivered a blunt reality check to the press: “To be clear, if I didn’t have the past that I did with Atlanta United, probably today I would be fired.”

Compounding their issues is the injury to Miguel Almiron. The 32-year-old fan favorite returned to Atlanta from Newcastle this season as a DP, but he is currently sidelined with a knee injury, leaving a creative vacuum in a team that has only managed seven goals all year. Three Atlanta Players to Watch: Aleksey Miranchuk: The Russian playmaker has taken the captain’s armband in Almiron’s absence. He remains their most consistent threat, leading the team with 4 goals this season. Emmanuel Latte Lath: A high-priced DP signing from Middlesbrough.

On the bright side, Toronto does have one of the highest goals allowed counts at 17, and it’ll take some extra effort from Emmanuel Latte Lath (one goal this season) and Cayman Togashi to create some chances as they come in set to score at +240 and 260 respectively. Toronto are the considerable home favourites here at -120 on the MLS odds, while Atlanta comes in as +300 challengers. A draw is set for +255 in this one.

Over 19 meetings in the competition so far, Toronto barely holds the candle with six wins to Atlanta’s five. While Atlanta claimed the last victory for either side back in June 2024, this fixture has seen a tie for the last two straight games, with four ties in the last six matchups, and their most recent confrontation in August 2025 ended scoreless.
