Auger-Aliassime Reaches European Open Semi-Finals
Félix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal defeated American qualifier Eliot spizzirri 6-2, 7-6 (6) to advance to teh semi-finals of the European Open in brussels. Auger-Aliassime secured the win with his 11th ace of the match.
The second-seeded Quebecer dominated the first set, breaking Spizzirri’s serve twice without facing a break point himself. The second set proved more challenging, with Spizzirri earning two set points in the 12th game before Auger-Aliassime held serve with an ace, forcing a 6-6 tiebreak.
In the tiebreaker, Spizzirri initially led 5-3, but Auger-Aliassime rallied to win four of the next five points. At the time of the tournament, the 25-year-old Auger-Aliassime was ranked 13th in the world and will next face the winner of the match between Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Raphaël Collignon.
Shapovalov Triumphs in Stockholm Quarter-Final
In Stockholm, Ontario’s Denis Shapovalov overcame Sweden’s Elias Ymer 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1 in the quarter-finals. Shapovalov held the advantage with 6-3 in breaks and 24-15 in winning shots.
The third-seeded Shapovalov will now compete against second-seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud. While Ruud previously defeated Shapovalov in 2021 and 2022, Shapovalov secured a victory against Ruud earlier this year, winning in the final in Dallas in February.
