Austin Chronicle Endorses James Talarico for US Senate | Breaking News

Talarico Gains Key Endorsement in Texas Senate Race

– Texas State Representative James Talarico received a significant boost in his bid for the U.S. Senate today with an endorsement from the Austin Chronicle. The endorsement comes as Talarico ramps up his campaign to challenge incumbent Senator John Cornyn.

The Austin Chronicle cited Talarico’s progressive record and potential appeal to moderate voters as key factors in their decision. In a statement accompanying the endorsement, the Chronicle’s editorial board highlighted Talarico’s background as a Presbyterian seminarian and former public school teacher, suggesting he could attract voters seeking an alternative to more conservative figures like Senator Cornyn.

“Texans would be lucky to have either candidate, state Rep. James Talarico or U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, represent us in D.C.,” the Chronicle wrote. “Both candidates have strong progressive records and are rising stars in the party, but with distinct narratives.”

Talarico’s campaign has focused on a message of empowering working Texans and challenging the influence of wealthy donors in politics. “The biggest divide in our country is not left vs right — it’s top vs bottom,” Talarico said in a news release. “Billionaire mega-donors and their puppet politicians have taken over our state and our country, rigging the system for themselves.” He described his campaign as an “underdog fight” against the political establishment and “a lot of money,” but one fueled by “people power.”

The endorsement arrives during a crucial period for Talarico, as early voting in the March 3rd primary election is already underway, having begun on and continuing through . He is facing a primary challenge from former U.S. Representative Colin Allred, who previously ran against Senator Ted Cruz in 2024.

Talarico’s campaign has also gained attention for his adept use of social media. Recent reports indicate he and fellow primary candidate Jasmine Crockett are both effectively leveraging digital platforms to connect with voters and build support. A recent debate between the two candidates took place on , at the Texas AFL-CIO Committee on Political Education Convention in Georgetown, Texas.

The Austin Chronicle also noted Talarico’s willingness to address difficult issues, citing his naming the war in Gaza as a “moral test of our time” as a demonstration of his depth and willingness to take a stand. This contrasts with what the Chronicle described as Crockett’s strength as a “quick-witted fighter.”

An eighth-generation Texan, Talarico has a history of legislative work focused on issues such as funding public schools, expanding job opportunities for young adults, and lowering the cost of childcare, housing, and prescription drugs. He gained prominence during recent legislative sessions for his sharp responses and a blend of progressive policies with traditional Christian values. He also recently appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience, further raising his profile.

The race for Cornyn’s seat is expected to be closely watched, as Democrats seek to flip the seat in a state that has become increasingly competitive. The Austin Chronicle’s endorsement provides Talarico with valuable momentum as he heads into the final stretch of the primary campaign.
