The Australian Government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Microsoft to advance the goals of the National AI Plan, focusing on collaborative arrangements to grow Australia’s artificial intelligence industry and support the development of a sovereign AI cloud.
The National AI Plan, released by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, sets out the government’s ambition to capture economic opportunities from AI, share benefits across the community, and manage emerging risks. It positions Australia as a regional hub for sustainable digital infrastructure and emphasizes foreign investment as critical to achieving its AI ambitions.
Microsoft’s commitment includes a A$25 billion investment in AI infrastructure, security, and skills in Australia, building on its previous A$5 billion investment. This collaboration supports the development of Australia’s first sovereign AI cloud through a partnership between US-based SambaNova and Australia’s SouthernCrossAI.
The plan highlights that Australia has attracted over A$700 million in private investment into AI firms in 2024, with businesses more than doubling their AI R&D investment to A$668.3 million in 2023–24, compared to A$276 million in previous years. Australian firms filed more than 600 AI-related patents between 2015, and 2024.
Global AI firms, including Groq, Atlassian, OpenAI, Canva, Harrison.AI, and Heidi AI, have established operations in Australia to access the country’s talent in software engineering, research excellence, and industries willing to test new technologies. The National AI Plan aims to leverage this activity to commercialize industry-level AI applications for global markets.
