Austria: Man Charged with Terrorism Over Alleged Taylor Swift Concert Plot

Vienna public prosecutors have filed terrorism-related charges against a 21-year-old Austrian man accused of plotting an attack on Taylor Swift’s concerts in the city in August 2024. The charges, announced Monday, allege the suspect declared allegiance to the Islamic State group and took steps to construct a shrapnel bomb.

According to a statement from the Vienna public prosecutors’ office, the unnamed defendant allegedly shared propaganda material and videos associated with IS via various messaging services. He is further accused of obtaining instructions online for building a shrapnel bomb using triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a highly unstable explosive frequently utilized by the terrorist organization, and of producing a small quantity of the substance. Prosecutors also claim the suspect made “several attempts” to illegally purchase weapons outside of Austria and smuggle them into the country.

While authorities have not publicly released the suspect’s name, Austrian media outlets have identified him as Beran A., reporting he was initially arrested in August 2024. His lawyer has previously contested the accusations leveled against him, according to local reports.
