Train travel from Jakarta to Surabaya offers a luxurious alternative to commercial flights, according to an essay published by Asia News Network on Oct. 2, 2026. Traveling aboard the Anggrek Suite Class Compartment on Kereta Api Indonesia provides private cabins, automated facial recognition entry, and competitive pricing compared to domestic business-class airfares.
Boarding at Gambir Station
The journey begins at Gambir station in Jakarta, where passenger processing utilizes an automated facial recognition system. The technology allows travelers to enter the terminal by scanning their face at a camera without presenting a physical ticket, according to the Asia News Network report.
The station experience contrasts with prior impressions of chaotic platform crowds, offering a streamlined departure process for the morning train ride. Arriving for an 8:20 a.m. departure, the author noted that Gambir station was very crowded and capable of awakening claustrophobia, but the facial recognition system created a strong impression. The camera displayed the traveler’s first name on a small screen upon entry, prompting a feeling of pride in a system more advanced than those seen at other train stations.
Riding the Anggrek Suite Class
Inside the train, the Anggrek Suite Class Compartment features individual private rooms equipped with reclining chairs, dual television screens, and an interactive tablet. The tablet controls cabin lighting, connects personal electronics, and displays real-time route tracking through a universal charging port.
Windows along the suite can be switched to opaque glass at the touch of a button. Stewards provide welcome drinks, such as a mix of spinach, celery, pineapple, and orange, alongside hot towels before departure. Located at the far left of the train, the suite is accessed via narrow hallways decorated with patterns beside the doors and illuminated by soft lighting. After being led to suite 2A by a steward, the author found the room surprisingly spacious, cozy, and private for a single person.
Rail Tickets Cost Less than Business-Class Flights
A round-trip ticket for the Anggrek suite costs Rp 4,300,000 ($239.55). By comparison, Garuda Indonesia business-class fares for the same domestic route range from Rp 9,000,000 ($501.42) to Rp 11,750,000 ($654.63), according to the Asia News Network essay.
The eight-hour rail journey provides an alternative during periods of flight disruption, following concurrent volcanic eruptions that grounded regional air travel across parts of Indonesia. The trip was taken in honor of National Train Day on Sep. 28, following familiarity with Amtrak’s Northeast Regional every other weekend over the preceding 12 years.
