IXI’s Autofocus Glasses Offer New Hope for Vision Impairment
Updated June 06, 2025
While tech giants explore augmented reality, IXI, a Finnish startup, is focusing on a more practical application: improving eyesight. Founded in 2021, IXI emerged from stealth mode in April with $36 million in funding to commercialize its autofocus glasses. These prescription specs promise to revolutionize vision correction for the visually impaired.
Niko Eiden, IXI’s cofounder and CEO, emphasized the company’s distinct approach. Rather than creating another platform for AI assistants or social media capture, IXI aims to solve a fundamental problem: impaired vision. The company’s autofocus glasses represent a significant advancement in vision technology, offering a potential alternative to traditional eyewear.

Eiden brings extensive experience to the project, having spent 14 years at Nokia developing imaging and augmented reality technology. He later co-founded Varjo, a leading European mixed reality company. Now, with IXI, he’s tackling the challenge of autofocus eyewear.
Unlike smart glasses with cameras and AI, IXI’s glasses use a low-power sensor to track eye movements. By emitting light pulses and measuring reflections, the sensor determines the distance of the object being viewed. This information is then sent to the lenses, which are made of liquid crystal between two layers of plastic. An electric field adjusts the liquid crystals, bending light to achieve autofocus in approximately 0.2 seconds.
IXI aims to replicate the evolution of cameras, moving from fixed focus to manual focus and now to autofocus, Eiden said.

From Static to Dynamic Lenses
IXI’s autofocus glasses are designed to replace bifocal and progressive lenses, which correct vision at multiple distances but have limited usable zones and distortions. IXI claims its technology offers a full field of vision across the entire lens. The low-power electronics fit within a standard frame.
While still in the research and growth phase, IXI has yet to announce a launch date. the company faces technical hurdles related to openness, clarity, and all-day wearability, ensuring the glasses meet medical requirements and match the optical quality of traditional lenses.
Eiden remains optimistic about the potential to disrupt the eyewear industry, a $200 billion market that is growing annually. He believes IXI can bridge the gap between smart glasses and traditional eyewear, where investment frequently enough prioritizes brand and design over optics.
IXI is not alone in this endeavor; french startup Laclarée and Japan’s Elcyo are also developing autofocus glasses. With its recent funding, IXI plans to expand its team, move to a new headquarters with specialized facilities, and hold live demonstrations later this year.
“From the static lens to the dynamic lens… it’s a natural evolution,” said Eiden. “Whether it’s us or another company, somebody will crack it.”
What’s next
As IXI ramps up its research and development efforts, the company’s progress will be closely watched by both the tech and eyewear industries. The potential for autofocus glasses to improve the lives of the visually impaired is significant, and IXI’s innovative approach could pave the way for a new era in vision correction.
