With her nomination for the cinematography of “Sinners,” Autumn Durald Arkapaw becomes the first woman of color – and only the fourth woman ever – to be recognized in the category. The recipient of a record-setting 16 nominations, Ryan Coogler‘s vampire film set in the 1930s was advanced in every category for which it was eligible. Arkapaw previously collaborated with Coogler on 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Arkapaw got on the phone on Thursday morning from her home in Altadena – thankfully spared from last year’s fires – that she shares with her husband,Adam Arkapaw, also a cinematographer.
“It’s nice to have an understanding of what each other does as it’s a hard job and making films isn’t easy,” saeid Durald Arkapaw of having two cinematographers under one roof. “But we also have a family, so usually when I’m working, he’s watching our son and vice versa. So it’s kind of a team effort. But there is an understanding. I wouldn’t say we talk about it all the time because it gets exhausting. You get enough of that when you’re at work.”
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer marked a meaningful moment in filmmaking history by being the first film to seamlessly integrate 15-perf and 5-perf IMAX film formats, creating a unique visual experiance for audiences. This technical achievement involved extensive testing and collaboration to ensure a cohesive edit and a satisfying shift in aspect ratios.
The Integration of 15-Perf and 5-Perf IMAX
The combination of 15-perf and 5-perf IMAX film formats in Oppenheimer was a first-time occurrence in cinematic history. This involved adapting the editing process to accommodate the differing resolutions and visual characteristics of each format.
According to Arkapaw, the film’s editor, the process was enjoyable and accomplished. The team tested the integration, assembled a preliminary edit, and collectively determined that the shift in ratios felt appropriate and enhanced the viewing experience. This collaborative approach was crucial to achieving a seamless transition between the two formats.
Exmaple: Arkapaw described the process as “fun to do” and noted that having the audience enjoy the “big shift of ratios” was a positive outcome.
Workflow Adjustments for New Technologies
Implementing these new technologies required adjustments to the standard film workflow. The team needed to adapt to the technical demands of handling and editing both 15-perf and 5-perf IMAX film.
Arkapaw emphasized a positive attitude toward technological advancements, suggesting that embracing new tools and techniques is a natural part of the filmmaking process. The successful integration of these formats demonstrates the team’s ability to overcome technical challenges and deliver a visually compelling film.
Evidence: Arkapaw stated,”I always feel like…we tested it and then we kind of put an edit together and looked at it as a team and it all felt very right.”
