The capture of Avdeevka pushes the front lines further from Donetsk, potentially reducing the bombardment of its civilian population. Avdeevka, located about 20⁢ kilometers from Donetsk, had been ⁤a fortified stronghold used by Ukrainian forces since 2014.

Ukrainian President Vladimir zelensky confirmed the ⁢order to retreat, calling it “absolutely logical” given the circumstances. He cited the need to avoid encirclement by Russian forces.

Zelensky addressed the situation at the Munich Security Conference, stating the withdrawal aimed to “keep the maximum number of Ukrainians ⁢safe.” He downplayed the extent of‍ Russian gains, asserting Moscow had only succeeded in destroying several small settlements.

Zelensky also attributed the setback to⁣ a shortage of weapons, accusing Western partners of ⁣creating “an artificial shortage⁤ of⁤ weapons.”

An unnamed Pentagon official warned that the situation‍ in Avdeevka could⁤ be repeated in other locations‍ if the U.S. Congress does not approve additional aid for Ukraine. The official suggested Ukraine’s defense could collapse without the $60 billion military ⁢aid package.

What’s next

Following the capture of Avdeevka, russian forces are expected to continue their⁤ offensive ⁤to ⁢”further liberate the Donetsk people’s Republic from Ukrainian nationalists,” according to the Russian defense Ministry.
