“Thunderbolts” Prioritizes Practical Effects, A Shift From Marvel’s Usual Approach
The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, “thunderbolts,” is reportedly taking a different approach to visual effects than many previous Marvel productions, leaning heavily into practical sets and backdrops. This shift, according to production designer Russell DeLeon, aims for a more tangible and visually rich aesthetic.
From Blue Screen to Rosco Backings and Painted Sets
DeLeon, in an interview, explained that the default approach in the past often involved extensive use of blue screens. However, for “Thunderbolts,” the team actively sought alternatives. “The default situation previous to us was probably let’s put a blue screen out there and do that,” he stated. Instead, they utilized Rosco backings (specialized translucent materials used for creating backgrounds) created in-house, and painted backings on approximately 80% of interior sets.
This emphasis on in-camera effects wasn’t solely an artistic choice; it also factored into budgetary considerations. DeLeon noted that avoiding the need to digitally alter exteriors could save money.”…if they don’t have to change the exterior,” he explained.
Filmmaking as Illusion: A Collaborative Approach
deleon emphasized the importance of creating a believable illusion through practical means whenever possible. He highlighted the collaborative spirit with directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who appreciated this approach. “You know, filmmaking is the art of illusion, and if we can do it physically… and Joe and Anthony really like that,” he said.
While acknowledging the limitations imposed by the nature of the film, its characters, and environments, the team prioritized practical effects whenever feasible.
Actors Surprised by Practical Stinger Scene
DeLeon revealed that the post-credits stinger scene in “Thunderbolts” was filmed using a practical backdrop. He noted that the actors were noticeably surprised, as they had become accustomed to the prevalence of blue screen technology in Marvel productions. This suggests a important shift in the production process and a commitment to a more tactile filmmaking experience.
MCU’s Visual Effects Evolution
Marvel studios has faced criticism in recent years regarding the quality of its visual effects. Reports from VFX artists have detailed demanding schedules and tight deadlines, leading to concerns about burnout and compromised quality. VFX Soldier has extensively covered these issues, highlighting the pressures faced by artists working on MCU projects.
A move towards more practical effects could alleviate some of these pressures, reducing the reliance on complex and time-consuming digital work. it also potentially allows for more creative control and a more collaborative environment on set.
