“Avengers: Endgame” has reclaimed the title of highest-grossing movie in box office history from “Avatar,” generating $2.925 billion worldwide following a theatrical re-release by Disney. The 2019 superhero epic sits just above James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi blockbuster, which has generated $2.923 billion globally after five re-releases.
Disney Owns Most of the Highest-Grossing Movies
“Avatar” spent a decade as the biggest release ever until “Endgame” overtook the record during its initial run in 2019. The crown shifted back in 2021 when “Avatar” returned to theaters ahead of the release of “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Disney holds ownership of both mega-franchises following its acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. The studio now commands seven of the 10 highest-grossing movies in history, including “Avatar: The Way of Water” at $2.33 billion, “Titanic” at $2.26 billion, and “Avengers: Infinity War” at $2.05 billion.
Re-Release Boost for Marvel Cinematic Universe
Disney and Marvel brought “Endgame” back to the big screen to generate audience excitement for the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday.” The recent re-release has pulled in more than $126 million worldwide. The Marvel Cinematic Universe remains the most commercially successful film franchise in history, pushing past a combined $35.07 billion across all movies following the summer performance of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”
Theatrical Run Leading to Doomsday
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo return to helm “Avengers: Doomsday,” marking the 39th installment in the franchise. The upcoming film serves as the first major reunion of the galaxy’s heroes since “Endgame” united Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, and Anthony Mackie in 2019. “Avengers: Doomsday” debuts in theaters in December.
