Ayo Edebiri Shines as Tone-Deaf Interviewer Stumbles on #MeToo and BLM
Venice, Italy – Actress Ayo Edebiri is being lauded for her insightful response after an Italian journalist attempted to sideline her during a discussion about teh #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements. The incident occurred during an interview promoting the film After the Hunt, starring Edebiri alongside Andrew Garfield and Julia Roberts.
ArtsLife TV journalist Federica Polidoro sparked controversy by asking Garfield and Roberts for thier thoughts on what was “lost during the politically correct era” and how Hollywood might evolve now that the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements are “done.” The question, and it’s initial exclusion of Edebiri, drew immediate criticism online.
Roberts, visibly surprised, asked Polidoro to repeat the question and clarify who it was directed towards. After Polidoro reiterated that the question was intended only for Garfield and Roberts, Edebiri, who is Black, stepped in.
“The movements aren’t ‘done at all,'” Edebiri stated firmly. “I think maybe hashtags might not be used as much, but I do think that there’s work being done by activists, by people everyday that’s stunning, significant work, that’s not finished, that’s really, really, really active, for a reason, because this world is really charged.”
Roberts and garfield echoed Edebiri’s sentiment, agreeing that both movements remain vital and ongoing.
The film After the Hunt, directed by Luca Guadagnino, explores complex themes of power and accountability.Roberts plays a Yale professor whose life is thrown into turmoil when a colleague is accused of sexual assault.
The interview clip quickly went viral, igniting a firestorm of criticism aimed at Polidoro. Many online commentators condemned the question and the initial exclusion of Edebiri as both racist and misogynistic.
TikTok user Chae’ Jones, in a post viewed over 1.5 million times, called the incident “highly unprofessional and blatantly racist.”
Conversely, many praised Roberts and Garfield for their handling of the situation, noting Garfield’s initial glance towards Edebiri and Roberts’s prompt for the journalist to rephrase her question. One X user commented, “They used their collective media training in perfect synchronicity.”
polidoro defended her line of questioning on Instagram, arguing that she was simply asking “uncomfortable” questions. She criticized her detractors for focusing on her phrasing rather than the actors’ responses, adding, “In my view, the real racists are those who see racism everywhere and seek to muzzle journalism.”
Though, Polidoro’s response has only intensified the backlash, with many pointing out that she failed to address the core issue: why Edebiri was initially excluded from the conversation. the incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing need for inclusivity and sensitivity in media interactions, and the importance of amplifying diverse voices in critical conversations.
