Ayumu Iwasa Making Progress: AlphaTauri’s Evaluation

AlphaTauri’s Chief Race Engineer Evaluates Ayumu’s Progress

November 29, 2023

J. Edgington, AlphaTauri’s chief race engineer, provided an in-depth evaluation of Ayumu Iwasa’s performance during the joint Abu Dhabi test, stating that Ayumu is making progress in his development.

Edgington expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to have Ayumu join the team for the final track day of 2023, where he had the chance to drive the AT04. The day began with a focus on aero mapping work to understand the car’s characteristics and compare it to tunnel data, a task that is often challenging to accomplish during race weekends. After a series of runs on the base car, it became evident that Ayumu was adapting quickly, allowing the team to conduct set-up tests and tire work. Despite encountering a setback during his second stint due to a technical issue, the day was deemed productive overall.

Edgington noted Ayumu’s clear, concise, and consistent feedback throughout the test, as well as his commendable performance on soft compounds during the first run. He emphasized that despite encountering some hiccups, all proposed test items were completed, indicating Ayumu’s overall progress. Looking ahead, Edgington affirmed that the team is preparing to return to Europe, prioritize rest, and refocus for a strong comeback in 2024 after a demanding season.

Edgington, I was informed that Ayumu is making progress.

J. Edgington, AlphaTauri’s chief race engineer, gave the following evaluation of Ayumu Iwasa, who drove in the joint Abu Dhabi test.

“It was an honor to welcome Ayumu to the team and give him the opportunity to drive the AT04 on the final track day of 2023. It started with aero mapping work to characterize the car and compare it to tunnel data. This is something that is difficult to do during Friday free practice during the race weekend, as it takes time. After a few runs on the base car, it was clear that it was settling in quickly, so we were able to do a series of set-up tests and tire work. “

“His feedback was clear, concise, and consistent with the test items he completed. He finished the day with two runs on soft compounds, and managed to get a good performance on the first run. However, he was unable to complete his second stint due to a problem with his machine. The details are still being investigated. Despite some hiccups, overall it was a productive day. “

“All proposed test items have been completed, and we know Ayumu is making progress overall. After a very long season, the team will now return to Europe, get plenty of rest and reset to come back strong in 2024.”
