Azure DevOps MCP Server Public Preview – Microsoft
Microsoft Unveils Azure DevOps Copilot Agent: Natural Language for Project Management
Table of Contents
Microsoft has launched a preview of the Azure DevOps copilot Agent, a new tool designed to bring the power of natural language interaction to Azure DevOps. This innovative agent allows developers to manage their Azure DevOps projects using simple, conversational commands, streamlining workflows and boosting productivity.
Bridging the Gap: Natural Language Meets Azure DevOps
For years, developers have relied on complex interfaces and specific commands to interact with project management tools. The Azure DevOps Copilot Agent aims to change that by enabling users to leverage GitHub Copilot’s AI capabilities to communicate directly with Azure DevOps.
How it Works: From Conversation to Code
The agent acts as an intelligent intermediary, translating natural language requests into authenticated REST API calls to Azure DevOps. This means you can now perform tasks like listing work items assigned to you or creating user stories for specific scenarios without needing to navigate intricate menus or remember precise commands.
To get started, users can clone the official GitHub repository, sign in using the azure CLI,configure their local mcp.json file, and then start the service. Once operational, the agent is ready to understand and execute yoru commands.
Preview Release details and Limitations
The current preview release of the Azure DevOps Copilot Agent is exclusively for Azure DevOps Services. support for on-premises Azure DevOps Server is not yet available. Microsoft is actively seeking early adopters to provide valuable feedback and suggest new features through GitHub Issues.
Building on Previous Success
This release builds upon the foundation laid by a separate MCP Server for Azure resource queries, which was introduced in May.That earlier tool allowed developers to retrieve information about Azure services like Key Vault, Cosmos DB, and Storage Accounts using natural language. The Azure DevOps MCP Server utilizes the same underlying technology, demonstrating Microsoft’s commitment to making cloud management more accessible.
Access and Requirements
Complete documentation, setup guidance, and the source code are readily available on the project’s GitHub repository. The preview is open to developers who use Azure DevOps Services and possess either a GitHub Copilot Business or Enterprise license. This initiative represents a significant step towards a more intuitive and AI-driven advancement experience.
