The Physiological Response to Infant Cries
A new study, utilizing thermal imaging, demonstrates that hearing a distressed baby cry causes a rush of blood to the face, increasing skin temperature in both men and women. This physiological response is not merely emotional; it’s an automatic reaction to specific acoustic features within the cry itself. The stronger the distress, and therefore the more chaotic the cry, the more pronounced the effect.
“The emotional response to cries depends on their ‘acoustic roughness’,” explained Prof.Nicolas Mathevon of the University of Saint-Etienne in France. “We are emotionally sensitive to the acoustic parameters that encode the level of pain in a baby.”
Why the Perceived Gender Differences?
Previous research often suggested differences in how mothers and fathers respond to infant cries. Though, this new study challenges that assumption. While mothers may initially be more adept at calming their babies due to earlier exposure through maternity leave, the basic physiological response to the cry itself appears to be consistent across genders.
Prof. Christine Parsons, who led the research team, highlighted two potential factors contributing to the perception of differing responses. First, mothers typically begin maternity leave before fathers take paternity leave, gaining experience in soothing their infants earlier. Second, during breastfeeding, it may be practical for fathers to prioritize sleep.
“People often assume there will be a clear distinction between men and women in how they respond to crying,” Parsons stated. “The authors set out to test this, and found no evidence for a difference. We were also surprised at how little difference there was between men and women.”
Acoustic Roughness and pain Perception
The study emphasizes the importance of “acoustic roughness” in triggering an emotional response. This refers to the complex, irregular sound patterns present in cries when a baby is experiencing pain or significant distress. The more chaotic and disharmonious the cry, the
