How the Seminyak Restaurant Fire Started

The incident unfolded when a waitress attempted to light a candle on a birthday cake located near a table celebrating a 70th birthday, according to visitor Tara Borelli. Two silver helium balloons were tied to chairs near the table, representing the milestone age. When the flame came too close, It popped then exploded, Borelli told news outlets, adding that guests could feel the heat from the blast.

Flames quickly reached the restaurant’s thatched roof, sparking an inferno that engulfed the entire venue within minutes. Diners described chaotic scenes as the fire spread rapidly across the property overlooking the Indian Ocean. It lit up like a firecracker… people were screaming and crying and running around, eyewitness Paul Cole recounted.

Evacuation and Emergency Response

Patrons rushed for safety as bedlam gripped the popular tourist spot. Borelli said she grabbed her seven-year-old daughter and 12-year-old cousin and ran straight onto the beach towards the water, while another relative stayed behind to help a man in a wheelchair escape. Other witnesses reported fleeing through back doors as the flames consumed the structure.

Fire crews responded swiftly to the emergency, dispatching ten engines from at least five different fire stations. Firefighters arrived within ten minutes and spent approximately two and a half hours bringing the blaze under control. Authorities confirmed that an Australian teenager sustained burns to his face and arms and was transported to a local hospital, while a restaurant staff member suffered burns to her hand.

Extent of Damage and Ongoing Investigation

Initial estimates from the Badung Fire Department place the total property damage at approximately 4 billion Indonesian Rupiah, equivalent to roughly £226,000. Four motorcycles parked near the venue were also destroyed in the fire. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is aware of the incident and stands ready to provide consular assistance if needed.

Local officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the blaze. The restaurant, which has operated in central Seminyak for more than three decades, remained closed following the incident as authorities and owners assess the structural destruction.
