Baltic Ship Graveyard: Controversy Over Subnade Island Sinking Sparks Debate

The car that sank in Lake Sudalezers in lejasciema belongs to Dāvis Uisks, a deputy of Gulbene Municipality, who is serving his first term as a public official.

“It’s bad that this happened,” says Valtis Krauklis, another deputy of Gulbene municipality. This is a state-owned lake located in the territory of both municipalities. This incident has highlighted the need to control the situation on the ice of such bodies of water.

“I am in favor of providing entertainment for young people in the countryside. There are already few opportunities here. People have been driving cars on the ice and will continue to do so. Perhaps the municipality shoudl designate where it is allowed and then monitor what is happening,” says Intars Liepiņš, a deputy of Gulbene Municipality.

Both Gulbene and Alūksne municipalities have only issued public appeals or requests to residents not to be on unsafe ice in January. “Other municipalities in Latvia have prohibited being on the ice of certain bodies of water. we do not have such a prohibition,” confirms Mārtiņš Didrihsons-Linards, head of the Gulbene Municipality Police.
