Baltic states are building defenses on the border

A network of hundreds of bunkers: Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia are building defensive structures on the borders with Russia and Belarus. That is planned.

Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia want to build around 600 bunkers on their borders with Russia and Belarus. The Baltic states want to deter and, if necessary, repel military threats. The Estonian Ministry of Defense announced this on Friday. As the Estonian newspaper “Postimees” reported, a network of hundreds of bunkers is to be created.

“The construction of anti-mobility defenses is a carefully thought-out project, the necessity of which arises from the current security situation,” said Hanno Pevkur, Estonian Defense Minister. “Russia’s war in Ukraine has shown that in addition to equipment, ammunition and personnel, physical defenses on the border are required to defend Estonia from the first meter.”

The concept is based on NATO decisions

According to Pevkur, the defenses were intended to prevent a military conflict in the region. “We are making these efforts so that the people of Estonia can feel safe, but if even the slightest risk appeared, we would be prepared for various developments more quickly,” Pevkur added.

The concept of defense facilities is based on the decisions of the NATO summit in Madrid, writes the Ministry of Defense in a statement. According to this concept, allies must be ready to defend their territory from the first meter and develop new regional defense plans. The concept combines prevention and field safety measures.

As the Estonian Ministry of Defense writes, a network of bunkers, bases and distribution lines will be built. In peacetime, no explosive devices, cutting wires or other obstacles would be placed on the border with Estonia.
