The victims, identified as two brothers aged 70 and 60, and a 44-year-old man, were pronounced dead at the scene or succumbed to their injuries shortly after being airlifted to medical facilities. The public prosecutor’s office has launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the devastating accident.
Witnesses at the scene, located near the town of Ambert in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, were understandably in shock. A local official reported that a dozen individuals who witnessed the crash were taken to a psychological support unit established in the nearby village of Saint-Just.
Rally Halted, Organizers Express Grief
The accident occurred around 11 am local time on Saturday. Joel Mathurin, the top government official for the area, described the event as “a tragedy for the world of racing.” regional prosecutor Laure Moisset characterized the crash as “very violent.”
In response to the tragedy, rally organizers immediately halted the race at 10:49 am. Spectators were asked to vacate the area, and the event’s planned award ceremony was subsequently canceled. Dozens of emergency personnel, including firefighters and police, were swiftly dispatched to the scene.
Focus on Spectator Safety and Course Integrity
The investigation is in its initial stages, with prosecutors emphasizing the need for a thorough examination of the Peugeot 208. The road where the accident occurred, described as a near-straight stretch by authorities, has been closed to facilitate the investigation.
A key aspect of the inquiry will be to determine whether the spectators were positioned in an authorized area during the rally. “I prefer to remain cautious,” stated prosecutor Moisset, adding, “It is still a little too early to be precise.”
The auto rally, a long-standing event organized since 1965, was celebrating its 32nd edition and had attracted 167 teams. This incident casts a somber shadow over the sport, especially as a race marshal tragically died during last year’s rally, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety protocols in motorsport.
