Barry Keoghan Pleads for Respect Amidst Online Backlash
Dublin-born actor Barry Keoghan has taken to social media to address the “disgusting” online abuse he’s faced following reports of his split from pop star girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter.
The 32-year-old, known for his roles in films like The Banshees of Inisherin and Saltburn, deactivated his Instagram account over the weekend, citing the relentless negativity as a distraction from his family and work.
In a heartfelt post on X, formerly Twitter, Keoghan expressed his distress over the “absolute lies, hatred, and disgusting commentary” directed at him. He specifically highlighted the cruel remarks about his appearance, character, parenting, and even his late mother.
“Dragging my character and everything I worked extremely hard for and stand for,” he wrote.”Talking about how I was a heroine [sic] baby and how I grew up and dragging my dear mother into it also.”
Keoghan, who has been open about his challenging upbringing in foster care and his mother’s struggles with addiction, emphasized the impact this online vitriol has on his young son,Brando.
“Each and every day I work harder to push myself on every level to be the healthiest and strongest person for that boy,” he shared. “I want him to be able to look up to his daddy, to have full trust in me and know I will have his back no matter what.”
He concluded his message with a plea for respect, urging online users to consider the lasting consequences of their words.
“Please be respectful to all. Thank u x,” he wrote.
This isn’t the first time Keoghan has spoken out against online negativity. Last month, during an appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast, he revealed the “absolutely disgusting” comments he’d encountered about his appearance. He also previously expressed his concern about his son being used as “ammunition” against him in online discussions.
Keoghan’s powerful statement sheds light on the damaging effects of online harassment and serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy and responsible online behavior.
Inside the Toxic Twitterstorm: An expert Weighs in on Barry Keoghan’s Plea for Online Respect
Following actor Barry Keoghan’s heartfelt plea for respect amidst a storm of online backlash, we spoke to Dr. Sarah thompson,a leading expert on cyberbullying and digital well-being.
“What Barry is experiencing is, unluckily, not uncommon,” Dr. Thompson explains. “Celebrities, especially those going through personal difficulties, are often targeted by a vocal minority online.”
Dr. Thompson emphasizes the deeply harmful nature of online abuse. “These attacks can have a devastating impact on mental health and well-being.It’s not just about reading hurtful words—it’s the relentless, public nature of it that amplifies the damage.”
Keoghan’s concerns about his son being exposed to this negativity highlight the far-reaching consequences. “Children are especially vulnerable,” Dr. thompson warns. “Being exposed to online hate targeting their parent can cause lasting emotional distress and insecurity.”
But Keoghan’s response, while painful, is also admirable. “By speaking out and calling for respect,he’s sending a powerful message,” Dr. Thompson says. “It’s important for celebrities and public figures to use their platform to challenge online toxicity and promote positive online behavior.”
Dr. Thompson believes Keoghan’s experience underscores the need for greater awareness and accountability online. “Platforms need to do more to combat hate speech and protect users from harassment,” she states. “But ultimately, we all have a obligation to be mindful of our words and actions online.”
