Barry Morphew Arrested in Suzanne Morphew Murder Case
Barry Morphew, 53, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection to the disappearance of his wife, Suzanne Morphew.Suzanne, 43, vanished in May 2020 from the couple’s home near Marysville, Colorado, about 150 miles from Denver. Morphew was taken into custody in cave Creek, Arizona.
Following his arrest, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office released a mugshot showing Morphew disheveled. His bail was set at $3 million. Investigators revealed that Suzanne’s death involved the presence of butorphanol-azaperone-medetomidine (BAM),a potent animal tranquilizer. According to the indictment,Barry Morphew was the only private individual in that area of Colorado with access to BAM at the time of Suzanne’s disappearance.

According to Barry, Suzanne was asleep in bed the morning of her disappearance, and he believed she planned to go for a bike ride. However, investigators suspect she was already dead. Authorities noted that Barry’s phone repeatedly entered and exited airplane mode in the 24 hours following her disappearance. The door of his truck was opened multiple times between 3:25 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., and the truck was backed into the garage at least once.
Further suspicion arose from Barry’s activities in Broomfield, Colorado. He claimed to be working a landscaping job but spent only 90 minutes at the site, spending the rest of the time in a hotel room that cleaning staff said smelled strongly of chlorine after his departure. Police also observed Barry making several trash runs at various locations around town, with little actual work being done.
Suzanne’s disappearance was reported on Mother’s Day after her daughters, Macy and Mallory, were unable to reach her. Barry asked a neighbor to check on the house and then requested they call the sheriff when Suzanne was nowhere to be found. During a police interview, Barry described their marriage as ‘the best’ and claimed they had a ‘fantastic weekend.’

However, Suzanne was allegedly having a two-year affair and despised her husband. After the search began, Suzanne’s bike was found abandoned down an embankment near their home, which police believe was staged. Her helmet was discovered days later along a highway about a mile away.
The disappearance sparked a media frenzy, and Barry made a tearful video appeal for details. “Suzanne, if anyone is out there that can hear this that has you, please, we’ll do whatever it takes to bring you back,” he said.
A large-scale manhunt ensued, but no trace of Suzanne was found initially. When questioned, Barry had scratches on his hands and arms. A .22 caliber bullet was found by Suzanne’s bed, and a tranquilizer dart needle cap was discovered in the dryer with washed bed sheets. Investigators also found empty tranquilizer darts, a needle for injecting tranquilizer chemicals, and a dart gun.
Morphew admitted to using a tranquilizer gun to shoot deer for their horns but couldn’t explain how the cap ended up in the dryer.
