Could someone please get this man a hand warmer?
TikTok user Austin Schultz (@austin.schultz) is making waves with his hilarious depiction of what happens when baseball players collide with winter’s icy grip. His video, “Baseball Players in the Cold,” shows Schultz and his teammates attempting to practice in sub-zero temperatures, resulting in some truly comical moments.
We spoke with Dr. Emily Carter, a sports physiologist at the University of Texas at Austin, to understand the science behind these struggles.
NewsDirectory3: Dr.Carter, what are some of the biggest challenges athletes face when training in cold weather?
Dr. carter: “Cold temperatures can significantly impact muscle performance. It takes longer for muscles to warm up and become flexible, leading to stiffness and decreased range of motion. Athletes might also experience reduced strength and power output. The cold can also affect reaction time and decision-making.”
NewsDirectory3: We see Schultz and his teammates struggling with their swings in the video. Could you explain why this might be happening?
Dr.Carter: “The cold directly affects nerve conduction. This means the signals from the brain to the muscles might be delayed or weakened, leading to slower reaction times and difficulty coordinating complex movements like hitting a baseball.”
NewsDirectory3: Schultz’s video has clearly resonated with a lot of people. Why do you think this struggle is so relatable?
Dr. Carter: “I think it speaks to the worldwide experience of dealing with the discomfort of cold weather. It also highlights the dedication of athletes who are willing to push themselves through challenges. Schultz’s video is funny as it’s honest. It shows the real side of training in tough conditions.”
NewsDirectory 3: Thank you for your insights, Dr.Carter.
The juxtaposition of America’s favorite summertime pastime with the realities of winter serves as a reminder that dedication doesn’t always take place in ideal conditions.
